Here is the rare piece of good news on this site. Do soundproof window inserts work? Yes, genuinely and measurably — they are the one window fix a renter can install, take with them, and expect a real drop in street noise from. They are also custom-made to your exact opening, cost hundreds of dollars per window, and sit in search results next to cheap plastic kits that do nothing of the kind.
Both halves need saying, so we'll say both: the tested numbers, the real cost, and the two situations where an insert disappoints no matter what you spend. What an Acoustic Window Insert Actually Is
An acoustic window insert is a rigid pane in a sealing frame that mounts inside your existing window, a few inches back from the glass you already have. It doesn't replace anything and it never touches the outside of the building. It sits in the interior opening like a second, invisible storm window.
The pane itself is usually thick acrylic or laminated glass. In its write-up of Indow's inserts, published as advertising content, Bob Vila describes quarter-inch acrylic glazing edged with patented silicone compression tubing, which squeezes against the window frame to "create a tight seal and dead air space between the insert and the window." Other makers use magnets instead of compression: Magnetite's system mounts a panel to a magnetic frame fixed around the window opening, so the panel pops on and off.
CitiQuiet, which fits interior inserts in New York apartments, uses laminated glass rather than acrylic and describes setting the insert on the sill a few inches off the existing window, which the company says creates "a cushion of dead air" that isolates the frame from sound vibrations.
Different frames, same idea: a second sealed pane, set back from the first, with air trapped between them.
Why the Air Gap Is the Mechanism
This is the part that gets misunderstood, and it's the reason inserts outperform anything you can hang on a curtain rod.
An insert is not mainly working by adding mass. A quarter-inch acrylic panel is light. What it does is decouple and seal. The trapped air between the old glass and the new pane acts like a spring between two separate barriers, so vibration in the outer pane doesn't transfer cleanly into the inner one. That two-layer, air-separated arrangement blocks far more than a single pane of the same total thickness would.
The seal matters just as much. Old apartment windows leak air at the sash, the meeting rail, and the frame, and anywhere air moves freely, sound follows. A compression or magnetic insert closes those paths across the whole opening at once.
The air gap also explains why depth is worth paying for. According to Innovative Aluminium and Glass, a larger gap is usually better for low-frequency sound like traffic rumble, with a smaller effect at high frequencies. There's a catch in the physics, too: two panes with air between them share a mass-air-mass resonance, a frequency where the panes and the air spring vibrate together and transmission loss dips. Laminate interlayers and mismatched thicknesses are used to disrupt it, which is why the higher-end inserts use laminated glass or thicker acrylic.
Note what this is not. An insert blocks sound crossing the window. It does not meaningfully absorb echo inside your room. Those are separate jobs, and the products that do them are different products.
What the Manufacturers' Numbers Actually Say
Here are the published figures. Every one of these is a manufacturer's own claim, so read them as best-case marketing numbers from a controlled test, not a promise about your bedroom.
Indow. According to Indow, its Acoustic Grade inserts reduce noise by 18.9 dBA when placed over single-pane windows, and by up to 12 dBA over operable double-panes, which the company puts at an STC rating of 42 to 45. Indow's own noise disclaimer puts Standard Grade inserts at 10 dBA — a 50 percent reduction — over operable single-pane windows. (Bob Vila's paid write-up for the brand quotes 10 to 12 dBA for that same grade.) Indow credits the testing to the Green Building Research Laboratory at Portland State University and to the Centre for Architectural Ecology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In percentage terms, Indow says Standard Grade blocks sound by 50 percent and Acoustic Grade by more than 70 percent over operable single-pane windows.
Context for those STC numbers. Bob Vila's Indow write-up puts a bare single-pane window at about STC 26 and a double-pane at STC 33 to 35, with an Acoustic Grade insert over a double-pane reaching as high as STC 45.
Magnetite. Magnetite says adding its panel to a dual 1/8-inch glazing unit lifts the assembly from STC 28 to STC 41, with sound transmission reduced by over 70 percent and the effect strongest in the 250 to 4,000 Hz range. For North America, Magnetite says the system reaches up to STC 43 on single-pane wood windows and up to STC 46 on double-pane aluminum.
CitiQuiet. CitiQuiet says its inserts are "capable of blocking up to an incredible 95% of external noise." That is a marketing claim on the company's own product page, with no dB or STC figure attached to it there. Treat it accordingly.
Different brands, different test setups, one consistent story: a sealed second pane is worth roughly 10 to 19 dBA on paper, and the acoustic-grade versions land far above the standard ones.
What Those Decibels Feel Like
Decibels are logarithmic, so a number like 18.9 dBA is easy to under-rate. Two reference points make it concrete. The smallest change most people can detect is around 3 dB — the threshold Magnetite cites from CSIRO research — and it takes roughly a 10 dB change before a sound is judged half as loud, as Sengpiel Audio's loudness reference notes.
So a Standard Grade insert's claimed 10 dBA over a single-pane window is, in perceptual terms, roughly the difference between the street and half the street. The acoustic-grade claim of 18.9 dBA is a much larger step again. That is why inserts are the only window product we treat as a genuine fix rather than a nudge.

What Soundproof Window Inserts Cost
This is where the honesty has to cut the other way. Inserts are made to measure, priced per window, and they are not cheap.
According to Angi's 2026 cost data, soundproof window inserts run $250 to $500 per window. Indow's own acoustic-grade product page lists $44 per square foot, with discounts starting at three inserts and shipping and sales tax excluded, as of September 2026. Bob Vila's write-up of the brand cites a starting price of $27 per square foot for Indow generally, which reflects the entry-level grade rather than the acoustic one. All prices as of September 2026.
Two practical consequences. First, the acoustic grade is the one with the numbers behind it, and it is the expensive grade — buying the standard grade and expecting 18.9 dBA is a mistake. Second, because pricing is per square foot, a big living-room window costs several times what a small bedroom window does. Start with one window: the room where noise is actually costing you sleep.
Why Inserts Suit a Lease
Almost everything that genuinely blocks sound is something a landlord will not let you install. Inserts are the exception, and it's the whole reason they belong on this site.
They mount inside the existing opening with compression tubing or a magnetic frame, they come out when you leave, and the window itself is untouched. Nothing is drilled through the sash, nothing is glued to the glass, no paint is stripped. The magnetic systems do fix a slim frame around the window, which is worth a conversation with your landlord first, but compression-fit inserts hold themselves in with pressure alone.
The catch is that they're custom-cut to one specific opening, so they follow you to a new apartment only if the new window happens to match. That's the real trade with inserts: deposit-safe, but not especially portable.
They also stack with what you may already own. An insert does the blocking; a heavy drape adds a little absorption and some light control on top. Where Window Inserts Disappoint
Two failure modes, and they account for most of the unhappy reviews.
Low frequencies. Inserts are much better at high-pitched noise than at deep noise. Indow says so itself in its noise disclaimer: its inserts reduce the high-frequency screech of a train on the tracks far more than the low-frequency rumble of its engine. That's consistent with Magnetite quoting its strongest performance in the 250 to 4,000 Hz band. Thumping bass from a car stereo, a neighbor's subwoofer, a motorcycle at idle, an aircraft rumble — those are the sounds an insert helps least with, and no window product on the market fixes them outright.
Noise that isn't coming through the window. This is the expensive mistake. Indow notes that sound enters through every surface, gap, and crack, including walls, doors, ceilings, floors and vents, and that your overall noise reduction depends on how much is arriving by those other paths. Acoustical Surfaces calls this flanking noise, sound taking an indirect route around the barrier you just upgraded. Seal the window perfectly and the street can still arrive through a thin wall, a gappy front door, or a shared duct.
Test before you spend. Stand at the window and listen, then move to an interior wall and listen again. If the noise barely changes when you step away from the glass, the window is not your weak point, and the money belongs in soundproofing the walls or the door instead.
The Cheap Thing Sold Under a Similar Name
Search "window insert" and you'll be shown $15 plastic kits. These are not acoustic inserts. They are thermal products, and the difference is not a matter of degree.
A shrink-film window insulation kit is a sheet of plastic taped to the frame and tightened with a hair dryer. Duck Brand markets its kits for sealing windows against drafts and cold-weather energy loss — an energy product. A film weighs almost nothing and has no rigid second pane, so it cannot do what a sealed acrylic panel does.
The same goes for the adhesive stuff sold as soundproof window film. Solar Screen's explainer states plainly that window film does not block noise the way most people think and will not give meaningful relief from traffic, construction or low-frequency rumble, because these films are designed for UV protection, heat reduction and glare control. Sellers who quote a number at all tend to claim only a handful of decibels — right around the 3 dB threshold above, where most people barely register a difference.
If a product is thin, flexible and sold flat in a box, it is a thermal or optical product wearing acoustic marketing. The real thing is measured, quoted and cut to your dimensions. That's the test we apply when we look at the best soundproof window inserts.
So, Are They Worth It?
If your problem is street noise arriving through an old single-pane window, and you can spend a few hundred dollars on one opening, acoustic window inserts are the best renter-friendly answer that exists. The published figures are double-digit decibels, they're backed by named test labs, and the whole thing comes out cleanly at move-out.
